Commuters from the city’s west will be hit with peak hour chaos, with the Werribee and Williamstown lines both down due to an equipment fault.

Passengers will instead have to catch replacement buses in a Wednesday morning blow to Melburnians in the western suburbs, who are already slowed by heaving traffic over the West Gate Bridge.

It was not immediately clear when the busy lines may resume.

Trains will continue between Flinders Street and North Melbourne stations, but the Transport Department has warned delays are likely.

Motorists have also been urged to drive carefully amid a rush of pedestrians and replacement buses near stations along the Werribee and Williamstown lines.

It will likely add to midweek traffic woes with the West Gate Tunnel Project continuing to disrupt motorists coming in from the suburbs.

“We ask passengers to check station platform displays, listen for announcements, and to allow extra time for their journey,” a Transport Department statement said.

“The VicRoads signals team is monitoring conditions in the area and will adjust traffic lights to assist with bus movements.”
