Cherry Creek Youth Justice Centre worker bashed, inmates assaulted in outbreak of violence

A staff member at Cherry Creek Youth Justice Centre has been hospitalised as the state’s newest youth jail was rocked by an outbreak of violence.

A staff member and a detainee have been injured in separate attacks hours apart at the state’s newest youth jail.

Police have been called in to investigate the outbreaks of violence on Sunday at the Cherry Creek Youth Justice Centre near Werribee on Sunday.

The Herald Sun has been told two inmates kicked through a fence to get to another youth in a courtyard.

The victim was then bashed and stabbed.

Soon after, a staff member was assaulted by two other detainees who took his keys and used them to get to another teenager and attack him, a source said.

The staff member was taken to hospital.

A Department of Justice and Community Safety spokesperson confirmed there had been two incidents at Cherry Creek on Sunday night.

The spokesperson said they had been resolved quickly and that there were no “serious” injuries.

“The matters have been reported to Victoria Police,” the spokesperson said.

In July, a makeshift knife was held to the throat of a staff member and the worker’s access card stolen by thugs being held over a murder.

The Community and Public Sector Union wrote to the department after that incident, alleging it had been enabled by “gross negligence”.

Shadow Corrections minister Brad Battin accused the Allan government of putting staff at youth justice centres at risk “as they ignore the chaos in the system.” “They were warned of the dangers at Cherry Creek, and they have failed to address any of them, I hope it doesn’t take a death to make them act, as that is far too late,” he said.
