ONE of the victims of paedophile Maurice Van Ryn has told a court she is “so angry” at the chances and dreams stolen from her by the former Bega Cheese CEO.
Van Ryn is awaiting sentence in the Sydney District Court after pleading guilty last year to 12 child sex offences on victims aged between eight and 16.
One of his female victims bravely read a victim impact statement while Van Ryn kept his eyes focused on Judge Clive Jeffreys, unable to look at her.
“I am scared for my future relationships,” the young woman said.
“He has stolen my right to share my body with someone for the first time.”
The girl told her parents of the sexual abuse once she learned Van Ryn had been arrested for assaulting other children between 2006 and 2014.
“I’m so angry...he has taken away my right for choice....it wasn’t his to take,” the victim told the court.
She said she blamed herself for not speaking up about his abuse earlier, feeling she could have spared other victims, “helpless and innocent,” from the assaults.
“I didn’t understand what he had done to me, I didn’t know it was wrong. I didn’t understand why he would do something like this.”
She said she had trouble concentrating at work ahead of coming to court today and “people have noticed because that’s not like me.”
“I keep seeing what happened over and over again,” she said.
“I don’t want anyone to know what happened to me, I don’t want people asking questions.”
She said she worried about “how long will it be before he’s out again.”
The court heard she suffered from depression as a teenager and had attempted suicide.
The young woman said she worried about “when he will be out (of jail)” and described Van Ryn as “a predator.”
The former CEO told an earlier hearing he had been sexually attracted to children since his early teens and bemoaned the fact that he wasn’t previously aware of testosterone suppressant medication, which he is now taking to stop his “urges.”
The hearing continues.
