Coronavirus: Stupid excuses Melbournians are using to get out of fines

A man who went in search of takeaway food because he didn’t want to pay an Uber Eats surcharge was among 177 fines dished out to Victorians breaking restrictions over the past 24 hours.

The eastern suburbs man told police he knew he was breaking stage 4 restrictions, but he was going to collect takeout because he didn’t want to pay the Uber Eats delivery surcharge.

Other rule breakers included two men and a woman who were found in an inflatable boat in the Caroline Springs lake, listening to music and drinking alcohol.

One man was caught at Lilydale Railway Station, more than 40km from home, who told officers he thought the restrictions were over, and he wanted to go for a day trip.

Another man was stopped at the Little River checkpoint after curfew and told police he was going to collect a mate so they could go back to his house and drink.

Eleven people were fined for failing to wear a mask, while 68 were penalised for curfew breaches.

More than 3000 spot checks were conducted on people at homes, businesses and public places across Victoria, bringing to 391,605 the number of spot checks conducted since March 21.
