A Gold Coast man who allegedly assaulted a shopping centre security guard before diving into the Broadwater to hide from police is set to spend the next month in custody.
31-year-old Tyronne Anthony William Colburn was charged with enter premises and commit indictable offence, serious assault of a person over 60, and stealing, after the alleged incident at Australia Fair shopping centre on Tuesday night.
Police allege the Parkwood man stole a trolley full of groceries at about 8.50pm on February 4 from a store at Australia Fair.
When he was stopped by a centre security guard, police allege the 31-year-old hit the security guard before making a break for the parkland.
A Queensland Ambulance Service spokeswoman said the security guard, aged in his 60s, was rushed to Gold Coast University Hospital with facial injuries and some back pain.
Meanwhile Mr Colburn allegedly ran into the Broadwater in an attempt to escape police.
Water police quickly apprehended the man and he was taken into custody, a Queensland Police Service spokeswoman said.
His charges were mentioned in the Southport Magistrates Court for the first time on February 5. He did not make an application for bail.
He is due back before the court on March 4.
