Zero cases: Townsville cleared of coronavirus

At long last! Queensland Health has confirmed Townsville has no active coronavirus cases.

How COVID-19 has trapped another vulnerable group

Queensland Health has confirmed Townsville has no active coronavirus cases.

Twenty-four cases of the virus were confirmed in the Townsville Hospital and Health Service area, which encompasses the Burdekin, Charters Towers and Hinchinbrook.

Each region had a confirmed case, however all have been cleared.

Queensland Health’s Chief Health Officer Dr Jeannette Young said everyone should continue practising social distancing and good hygiene however.

Why Katter is staying away from Canberra

“You should only be socialising with members of your household or one other person when leaving your home, or you can have two visitors visit your home,” Dr Young said.

“While we have eased restrictions to allow Queenslanders to leave their homes for recreation within a 50km radius, if the place you plan to visit is crowded when you get there and you can’t easily exercise the 1.5 metre social distancing rule, then you should go to another location or visit at a less busy time.

“While Queensland has continued to record very low numbers of new cases over the past week, we cannot be complacent and it’s so important that we continue to exercise social distancing, good hygiene and comply with all the restrictions in place, as well as staying home if you’re unwell.”

Across Queensland there are 52 active cases, with four of these in intensive care. Since the outbreak began, 1043 cases have been confirmed in the state and sadly six people died of coronavirus.
