Today is the first day of winter but don’t get too rugged up just yet.
The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast winter to be warmer than average across northern and eastern Australia, which will come as a relief after a wintry blast in May broke records across North Queensland.
Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Peter Markworth said Townsville could expect slightly warmer than average temperatures this week with sunny conditions.
The maximum today is expected to be 27C and tomorrow 28C but on Wednesday it will be cooler.
“Minimum temperatures should drop on Wednesday to 14C from 16C, and then potentially even further on Thursday.” Temperatures in Townsville at this time of the year typically get to a high of about 26C and a low of 15C.
Mr Markworth said cool, dry air would make its way up toward North Queensland this week. “The winds are likely to increase over the waters in particular. We will likely see those 20 to 25 knotters.”
Thursday is likely to be the coldest day of the week, dropping to a low of 12C.
In the regions, pleasant conditions can be expected this week for Ayr, Charters Towers and Ingham. Ingham could have some rain over Friday but it will most likely be dry for the rest of the region.
Mr Markworth said Townsville could have a wetter than usual winter.
