A month’s worth of rain and day time temperatures 10C below the May average are expected this weekend.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast Townsville will shiver through Saturday, with the mercury tipped to rise to only 17C while the minimum will be just 16C.

Bureau meteorologist Shane Kennedy said up to 30mm-plus could also fall today and tomorrow.

On Thursday 50-150mm of rain fell between Ingham and Cairns while Townsville was doused by more than 20mm as a cloud band moved over the state.

Townsville’s average monthly rainfall for May is 32.9mm.

Mr Kennedy said a second cloud band would likely deliver 15mm to 30mm-plus of rain for parts of North Queensland over the next two days.

“A combination of cool dryer air and thick cloud cover and rainfall should result in significantly cooler day time maximum temperatures … particularly on Saturday when temperature records may be broken,” he said.

“In the north and west there is a possible impact on cattle on Friday and Saturday due to cold, wet windy conditions.”

Charters Towers can expect a maximum of 14C on Saturday and a cool of 7C on Sunday. Ayr can expect a high of 16C on Saturday and Ingham will get up to 16C.

Rain is also forecast across the regions, with Ingham tipped to get the most with the bureau forecasting up to 45mm on Saturday.

“This rain band is being produced by a thick deck of cloud caused by tropical moisture being drawn in from Indonesia from an out of season tropical low and warmer than usual Indian Ocean,” Mr Kennedy said.

“This cloud band is stretching across the country … undercut by colder, drier air that is forcing the tropical air up making it rise create cloud and rain out.

“This cloud band is expected to move offshore of the state on Sunday with cooler and drier conditions remaining.”
