Croc swims down Ross Creek

A crocodile caused quite a surprise as it glided past Sabina Scott enjoying a coffee on a yacht moored in Townsville.

The Brisbane sailor, who is on a voyage from Cairns to Brisbane, said the predator swam past shortly before 8am on Wednesday.

“It was command, it knew what it was doing. It was very powerful,” she said.

“I was having my morning I just looked up and saw it.”

She scrambled to capture the crocodile swimming by on her mobile phone. While she was unable to determine a length of the crocodile, she said the video made it look “deceptive”.

“I was not too surprised because I had read so much about crocodiles in North Queensland,” she said.

Ms Scott was more surprised by the nonchalant reaction of locals towards the sighting.

A Department of Environment and Science spokesman said the crocodile in Ross Creek was likely an estuarine crocodile. There have been several croc sightings in the area, with another photographed at the Port of Townsville on the same day.

Last week, wildlife officers attempted to capture a crocodile swimming off The Strand.

The spokesman said all crocodile sightings should be reported by phoning 1300 130 372.
