TAKING a holiday without even leaving your house is what Tara Parish loves about reading at the Townsville’s Funky Book Club meetup.

The Townsville’s Funky Book Club meetup book tribe leader started the club three years ago to motivate herself to expand her literature intake.

“I started the club because my business got in the way and I wasn’t making enough time to read and normal people would just read more books but I started a meetup to read funky books,” Ms Parish said.

“Work will always fill as much time as you let it and you have to make time for the things that are rewarding and reading is rewarding.”

Ms Parish said she “reads everything” and liked to stretch the boundaries with the club’s book list, picking genres including horror, sci-fi, romance and young adult.

“We really challenge your reading at the Funky Book Club, you will never know what book will be on the list,” she said.

“I have some ladies who like to read romance and then I managed to push them to read The Hunger Games.

“They really enjoyed it and they said thank you because they wouldn’t have even picked up that book to read if it wasn’t for the club.”

Ms Parish said she felt a sense of community at the club and “reading is like going on holiday but you can stay home”.

“You are at home but you are stepping out to someone else’s stories or life or enter a new world or adventure and you come out a little bit better at the end,” she said.

Club member Iain Gordon said that he joined the club to use reading as a means to distract himself from everyday issues.

“I always forced myself to read because I enjoy reading books and I joined the book club because it gets me to read things I would never ever read,” he said.

“I had a significant mental health issue at the beginning of February and I wanted a way of getting outside of what was going on in my head so I decided I was going to come to the club.

“If I am really struggling, I get a book out and read it and it means that it takes me into another world and I don’t always want to occupy the world that is going on in my head.”
