Townsville has been warned to prepare for what is likely going to be the coldest day of the year as a wintry blast hits the state.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Shane Kennedy said Townsville’s midweek minimum temperatures would likely plummet down to single digits.

He explained cool and dry air was extending across the state in the wake of a trough that moved off the east coast this morning.

This change would mean minimum temperatures could drop up to 6C below average for this time of year.

“In Townsville (expect) maximum temperatures between 20C and 25C and minimum temperatures getting below 10C, so looking at a minimum of 8C on Wednesday and 9C on Thursday,” Mr Kennedy said.

If the mercury does hit 8C it will be the coldest day of the year. The average minimum temperature for June in Townsville is 14.7C.

To date, the coldest temperature recorded at the Townsville Airport was 9.4C on May 25.

“Many locations could see their coldest day of the year so far,” Mr Kennedy said.

Day time temperatures in the city should however warm up to the mild winter days so many of us enjoy, with sunny conditions forecast for most of the week.

Those in North Queensland should spare a thought for those living in the state’s south, with some areas expecting sleet as subzero temperatures hit.

“The coldest part of the state is expected to be around the Granite Belt, with Stanthorpe looking at maximums of 11C to 12C over the next couple of days with the minimums getting down to 0C to -1C,” Mr Kennedy said.
