Complimentary dumplings and tea will on the cards for Chinese New Year revellers in Townsville.
Lion dancers will ring in the Year of the Rat at the Victoria Bridge forecourt on Friday night.
Division 3 Councillor and Sister Cities Community Forum chairwoman Ann-Maree Greaney said cultural diversity was one thing that made Townsville a vibrant place to live.
“Townsville is more multicultural now than ever before, and this is something worth celebrating,” she said.
“Chinese New Year is a significant festive period for so many people living in and visiting Townsville, so Council is working with The Townsville Chinese Club to celebrate the Lunar New Year.”
Cr Greaney said free dumplings and tea would be served throughout the night, providing a taste of Chinese culture.
Other entertainment will include a parade of children wearing traditional Chinese outfits qipaos and food trucks.
“It’s one of the events that we put on each year as part of our cultural events, but also about acknowledging our very close ties with China,” Townsville Mayor Jenny Hill said.
Townsville is a sister city to China’s Changshu and Foshan.
Townsville’s Chinese New Year celebrations start at 6.30pm and run until 8pm on Friday.
