IDEAL climate and consistent sun has Townsville in the box seat to reap the benefits of the State Government’s restrictions ease.
With the region littered with beautiful nature hikes, camping opportunities and outdoor fun, Townsville has positioned itself as the perfect holiday destination for Queenslanders looking to let off a bit of steam after three months of lockdown.
But it won’t be just the domestic tourist reaping the benefits of a perfect winter.
Townsville outdoors lover Heidi Joosten, who was lured to the Sunshine State from Melbourne a few years ago, said she couldn’t wait to do more exploring with partner Dan Southwell.
“We love (the region), we saw the news today, we’re like ‘let’s book accommodation next weekend’,” she said.
“The beaches and warm weather, the lifestyle, the sunshine. The weather is a big driver for me to stay here.
“I used to always come up here to visit my sister and it’s the laid-back lifestyle that got me, everyone is a lot more friendly and willing to have a chat. They’re willing to tell you all the good places to go.”
Tourism operators in Townsville will also be preparing for a boost, with the easing of restrictions coming in time for peak season in the winter school holidays. Raven Tours operator Rod Jones said he was in a state of “happy disbelief” following the announcement.
“It’s caught me off guard but wow, it’s great news,” Mr Jones said.
Mr Jones said his micro tourism business offered curated tours aimed at locals to help them rediscover the best parts of our region.
