After months of being closed a Townsville cinema has announced it will reopen this week.

Reading Cinemas will open on Thursday and screen thrillers, action films and family blockbusters.

Manager Michael Williams said COVID-19 had meant there will be changes to how people can buy tickets, seating and popcorn.

The global pandemic forced cinemas across Australia to close on March 23.

“Booking online is best. There’s a two seats space for people (booking). When people book online, the system will automatically allocate space,” Mr Williams said.

“We’re restricted to 20 people per theatre.”

Mr Williams urged families or groups to book in one transaction to ensure they secured seats.

He said cash would not be accepted and people will have to pay for tickets, food and drink using cards only.

While programming was yet to be finalised, Mr Williams anticipated the Cannon Park cinema would be screening Sonic the Hedgehog, Spies in Disguise, The Current War, The Way Back,

Emma, 1917, Bloodshot, The Invisible Man, Paddington and Jojo Rabbit.

He said people should check online or on Facebook for showtimes.

A number of blockbusters which were meant to be released earlier this year, including the latest James Bond film No Time to Die, Wonder Woman 1984, Mulan and Tenet have been delayed.

These delays have pushed back the reopening dates of Event Cinemas and Warrina Cineplex, which expect to open doors in July.

Mr Williams anticipated Mulan would be released in time for the school holidays while Tenet would be released in July, Wonder Woman 1984 in August and thriller A Quiet Place in September.

Event Cinemas general manager Arlene Valentine said a COVID-19 safety plan was being put together and was preparing for the two cinemas in the city to reopen once 100 people could enter.
