Offenders remain at large after a stolen car has been found ditched in a Townsville river overnight.

A Nissan X-trail was reported stolen from a residence in Kirwan last night and has since been found ditched in the Bohle River, near Dalrymple Road.

District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Kylie Haydon said it may be sometime before the SUV is able to be removed given its tricky location.

“There was no one found in or near the vehicle and it remains in situ,”

“It’s going to be difficult to extricate it from the river.”

Queensland Police Services crime data reported 101 offences involving unlawful entry, unlawful use of motor vehicle, theft, and traffic and related offences in the Townsville region between June 7 – June 13.

The live data showed most of the crimes happened on weekends with 33 on Friday and 17 on Saturday night.

Snr Sgt Haydon acknowledged this was an issue within the Townsville community.

She said residents needed to play their part in curbing the issue.

“Police react to reports of stolen vehicles quiet regularly in Townsville so our message to the public is vehicles need to be secured and keys hidden away out of sight in an effort to prevent the stealing in the first place,” Snr Sgt Haydon said.
