Townsville Jazz Club now serenading The Strand

A Townsville club who now calls The Strand home is hoping to spread their love of music with up and coming musos-in-the-making.

A TOWNSVILLE club that now calls The Strand home is hoping to spread its love of music with up and coming musos-in-the-making.

The Townsville Jazz Club now plays at the Fish Inn Rockpool, offering their audience a bigger space for families to enjoy the cool melodic sounds.

Guitarist Dylan Russell joined the band late last year and is one of the youngest club members.

Mr Russell said he wanted to encourage young people to appreciate jazz music.

“Coming from someone who attended jazz events as a kid, it really helped me and was valuable for my musical development,” he said.

Mr Russell said he started playing the guitar aged 10 and experimented with different musical genres.

“From my late teens to early 20s I was mainly a rock guitarist which I still play, but I also like the more sophisticated sound of jazz,” he said.

“It is difficult music to play but I am also attracted to the challenge of playing jazz well.”

Mr Russell said the new venue was the ultimate accessory to jazz music.

“It feels very satisfying that there is a full crowd and it is pleasing to have a crowd that really listens at jazz,” he said. “Fish Inn has good acoustics and a good sound and a great view of Maggie island as well as good food and drinks.”

The Townsville Jazz Club plays at the Fish Inn Rockpool on the second, fourth and fifth Sunday of the month, from 5pm until 8pm.
