A man who inflicted a string of serious assaults on the mother of his child has fronted court again, years after being convicted of assaulting a little girl.
Corey Dean Caulton appeared in Townsville District Court on Friday morning after beating a woman who was pregnant with his child throughout the offences.
Crown prosecutor Rana Aldas said the 32-year-old became angry with the woman after finding out she re-downloaded social media apps on her phone, so he grabbed her by the throat and pushed her to the ground.
“He laid on top of her with his hand grasped around her throat,” Ms Aldas said.
“Her other son walked in and it stopped.”
In a separate instance while driving his grandfather and the woman who sat in the back of the car, Caulton again became angry with the woman while stopped at a red light and threw his phone at her chest, according to the crown.
Additionally the man punched her in the head in a further, separate offence Ms Aldas said.
While the man was behind bars, the woman ended their relationship by sending an email to him and when he got out he stalked her for 23 days by sending 70 messages to her alone on just one day and sent 102 messages on another, the court was told.
Ms Aldas said some of the messages included, “the lord better save you”, “you’re a dog motherf--ker” and “Mount Isa push bike”.
She also outlined the man’s “deeply disturbing” criminal history which included a conviction of indecent treatment of a child in 2016.
“He took an interest in a 12-year-old girl, he broke into her house at night,” Ms Aldas said.
“She was having a sleepover with friends, he touched one of those friends and then dragged the 12-year-old girl through the house during which he grabbed her underwear and pants and ripped them at the back.
“The complainant’s grandad woke up to the conduct and luckily stopped it.”
Defence barrister Tom Hancock instructed by Resolute Legal said the father of four could be “relatively useful” in the community when not using methamphetamine, submitting a letter on behalf of a program the man had taken part in.
“The reference said he showed a lot of promise, was easy to work with in class and was becoming a bit of a mentor,” Mr Hancock.
When handing down a sentence Judge Ian Dearden highlighted the man’s horrific history.
“You have behaved violently, appallingly and despicably,” he said.
“The mother of your child deserves the greatest respect. You respond with violence that makes life for other people around you awful, miserable and painful.”
Caulton pleaded guilty to stalking with violence, assault occasioning bodily harm and common assault.
He was sentenced to two years jail, with 235 days spent in pre-sentence custody declared as time served and granted immediate parole.
