Townsville City Council has given the go-ahead on an application for a major mixed-use entertainment development.
The council granted a material change of use for the Idalia development that will comprise of a rock-climbing facility, bowling alley and a cinema.
It had been stalled after every Townsville councillor declared a conflict of interest at the first meeting of the year and was placed in the hands of the Townsville City Council CEO Mike Chiodo.
The Townsville Bulletin this week reported at the 2016 elections developer Interlaken donated $990 and the Lancini Property Group, which wrote a submission against the development, donated $1500 to the Team Jenny Hill campaign. This meant Mayor Jenny Hill, Deputy Mayor March Molachino, councillors Margie Ryder, Ann-Maree Greaney, Russ Cook, Kurt Rehbein, Maurie Soars and Les Walker were unable to vote due to a conflict of interest and would leave the council chambers.
Mr Chiodo approved the material change of use after reviewing the application and the recommendations made by the officers which determined the development was within the strategic intent of the Townsville City Plan.
It is expected the development will support up to 200 jobs during construction and a further 40 jobs once construction is finished.
The application is for a site located at the Fairfield Homemaker Centre.
