Australia’s film community is rallying around one of Townsville’s brightest stars, Murray “Muz” Lui, after the beloved cinematographer suffered a major health scare that’s left him unable to work for now.

The Townsville talent, known for his work on films like Black Snow and Top End Wedding, now faces a long and challenging road to recovery.

With no income to cover his living and medical expenses, close mate Steve Monk launched a GoFundMe campaign, and the response has been overwhelming, raising more than $48,000 so far.

“Muz experienced a major health incident a few months ago — by some miracle, he survived, and we are all incredibly grateful for that,” Mr Monk said.

“However, his journey to recovery is expected to be long and challenging.

“Muz is now back home, making steady progress, and is being well cared for by his loving family and a team of outstanding medical professionals.

“Despite this positive progress, his recovery is projected to be slow and requires a lot of time and patience before he will return to his normal gregarious self.

“Given the extensive nature of his recovery, Muz will be without any source of income for an extended period of time.”

Mr Lui, who grew up in the Torres Strait before moving to Townsville and attending Mundingburra Primary and Pimlico High School, has spent over 20 years in the industry, showing audiences his talent behind the camera.

Now, as he works to get back on his feet, the outpouring of support is making a world of difference.

“No contribution is too small, and every bit of support will be deeply appreciated and will go a long way in easing his financial burden,” Mr Monk said.

“Your generosity and kindness will greatly aid Muz as he works towards a full recovery.”
