Three members of the original 2012 ‘bring P!nk to Townsville’ flash mob stand on the cusp of greatness today.
From humble beginnings making stickers and shirts, to a relentless Facebook campaign - it’s all been worth it.
Kylie Morgan was 34 when she danced on Flinders St in the middle of the Sunday markets, hoping P!nk would see the video and include a Townsville in her 2013 Truth About Love tour.
It didn’t happen, but this time, with the help of a new 25,000 seat stadium to sweeten the deal, Townsville was able to pull off a massive coup and became the only regional city on P!nk’s 2024 Summer Carnival Aussie tour.
The singer’s first Townsville concert sold out in 16 minutes, so a second one was quickly scheduled.
“I think when it starts, there will be crying,” Ms Morgan said.
“I’ve got tickets to the Friday and Saturday shows. I plan to start lining up at 12.30 because my tickets are for the front of the GA (general access) and I want to be one of the first in there so I can get as close to the stage as possible.”
The mega-fan is committed to dancing the night away in her leather pants and glitter boots, and will be rocking her ‘Bring P!nk to Townsville’ team shirt.
Fellow flash dance member Jo Aldridge was also bracing for the night of all nights.
“When I started the Facebook page (in 2012), P!nk was the best person to focus on because of how she listens to her fans,” Ms Aldridge said.
“I love her because she’s relatable, she’s down to earth and she does listen to what the fans are saying.”
Ms Aldridge said the success of P!nk has paved a way for more musicians to consider Townsville.
“We did what we did 12 years ago because when you factor in flights, accommodation and tickets, it’s too expensive for a lot of people to attend a Brisbane or Sydney show,” she said.
“Now, the proof is in the pudding. It sold out, and this opens the door for others to think about coming up here.”
While Elton John did sell out the stadium for his Farewell Yellow Brick Road concert in 2020, he only performed once, which means P!nk can officially claim the title of ‘biggest act to ever play in Townsville’.
Her combined crowd of nearly 50,000 people even puts her above Groovin’ the Moo - which peaked at 15,000 - and we look forward to seeing if her record will ever be beaten.
