The Museum of Tropical Queensland will reopen in May after shutting its doors last March to undergo a $3.6m restoration

THE Museum of Tropical Queensland will reopen in May after shutting its doors last March to undergo a $3.6m restoration.

Builders have spent the past 14 months making internal and external repairs to the museum after it was damaged in the 2019 floods.

The reopening on May 8 will feature a community day for children to explore the wonder of science to coincide with the 2021 World Science Festival Queensland.

Queensland Museum Network chief executive Jim Thompson said the repairs had been a success.

“The roof works have been completed and we’d like to thank the Townsville community for their patience and also their unwavering support of us online on our Museum at Home website during the closure,” he said. “Our teams are looking forward to reconnecting with visitors in person and inviting them to rediscover all their favourite things inside the museum and join in the fun during World Science Festival Queensland in Townsville in May.”

Members with annual passes will get a sneak peek before the official opening with early access to the museum from April 27 to May 6.
