Two teenage girls have been rushed to hospital after a shocking e-scooter crash near a busy Townsville offramp — the latest in a string of scooter crashes across the city over the Easter long weekend.
The duo, aged 15 and 16, were doubled up riding on the same e-scooter when they collided with a car exiting the Ring Road offramp along Riverway Drive in Condon about 7.05pm on Monday.
Queensland Ambulance Services confirmed the girls had suffered head and leg injuries in the crash and were taken to Townsville University Hospital in stable conditions.
The driver of the vehicle, a 39-year-old man, escaped unscathed.
The investigation into the crash remains ongoing and police are keen to speak to anyone who witnessed the incident or has dashcam that could assist investigations.
It’s part of a growing — and worrying — trend across the region, with e-scooter accidents piling up and pushing local emergency services to the brink.
Just a day earlier, a primary school-aged boy suffered a head injury in Bohle after a scooter crash on Clay Street around 5.59pm. He was also taken to Townsville University Hospital.
And in a late-night crash on The Strand in North Ward, a woman in her 20s copped arm and leg injuries after coming off an e-scooter about 11.29pm on Sunday.
It follows alarming new data from Townsville University Hospital showing a staggering 60 per cent spike in e-scooter related injuries the past year — soaring from 277 cases in 2023 to a whopping 444 in 2024.
Police have issued stark warnings about e-scooter safety after two people — a 35-year-old man and a 15-year-old girl — tragically died in separate e-scooter crashes across Townsville last year.
