The Goldfield Ashes could be affected by rain with a large storm system encroaching on Charters Towers.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe storm warning for parts of Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Herbert and Lower Burdekin, North West, Central Highlands and Coalfields.

It said severe storms were likely to produce heavy rainfall that may lead to flash flooding.

There will be a medium to high chance of rain in Charters Towers over the Australia Day long weekend.

The bureau forecast up to 10mm of rain on Saturday, 20mm on Sunday and 15mm on Monday.

Temperatures will also be high at the weekend, reaching a top of 35C on Saturday.

Goldfield Ashes wet weather rules states the side batting first in the First and Ladies Grade must complete their allotted overs and the side batting second must complete a minimum of five overs. If the side is unable to do so, a washout will be declared.
