Queensland will be blanketed by a cold system all week, driving down Townsville’s minimum temperatures to single digits.

Lows of 8C can be expected until Friday as a large low pressure system heads north.

Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Rosa Hoff said North Queensland’s inland regions have experienced temperatures as low as 6C.

“(Townsville) got down to 14C last night but a little further inland it was getting down to those single digits, like Woolshed, it got down to 6C,” she said.

“We’ve got quite a large low pressure system over the Tasman Sea near New South Wales. It’s helping to pull cold wind from the south into Queensland. That cool air has already moved in Northern Queensland.”

Winds of up to 25km/h can be expected in the week.

The deep low over the Tasman Sea will move slowly eastwards and continue to drive west to south-westerly winds across most of Queensland, leading to dry and mostly clear skies.

“There is very cold and dry air from the south so really reducing our chance of rain,” Ms Hoff said.

In Charters Towers, temperatures are expected to be even colder dropping to a low of 7C during the week, while Ayr will be slightly warmer reaching lows of 8C and Ingham will reach a low of 9C.

The southerly system is expected to move east by the weekend, providing some reprieve from the brisk morning temperatures.

On Saturday, Townsville can expect a low of 10C and a maximum of 25C, warming slightly on Sunday when minimum temperatures are expected to drop to 15C.
