A TOWNSVILLE mother charged with killing her young daughter allegedly googled if she would go to jail for leaving a child in a car a day before the girl’s lifeless body was found inside a vehicle.
The shocking claim was aired for the first time in court on Tuesday where the woman’s lawyer disputed the allegation.
Rylee Rose Black died in November 2020.
Police alleged the three-year-old Rylee died from heat exposure after spending hours in a four-wheel drive parked in front of a home in Burdell.
The girl’s biological mother, Laura Peverill (Black), 39, and her then boyfriend Aaron Hill, 32, were both charged over the death and police earlier revealed they would allege the couple left Rylee in the car while they binged Netflix.
Peverill’s matter was mentioned before Townsville Supreme Court for the first time on Tuesday where it was confirmed the state had decided to prosecute the woman for manslaughter.
Her lawyer revealed that police alleged the mother used Google to search “whether she would go to jail for leaving a child in a car” the day prior to the little girl’s tragic death.
“We say it was a different day,” the lawyer said.
“We say it was the afternoon of the incident, not the day before.”
Peverill’s lawyer said it was not yet known if her client would accept the charge and plead guilty or if she would take the matter to trial.
She said the defence team had sought testimony from two expert witnesses.
The lawyer told the court one expert report related to “the memory lapse of leaving the child in the vehicle” while the second report would address the allegations related to the google search.
Peverill’s case will return to court, in a private meeting between the judge and legal representatives, in late July.
Her co-accused Hill still has his case before the Magistrates Court where it is next due for mention on June 13.
