Residents living west of Townsville have been warned to brace for storms likely to produce heavy rains which could lead to flash flooding.
The Bureau of Meteorology today issued a severe storm warning spanning parts of Northern Goldfields and Upper Flinders, Herbert and Lower Burdekin, Central Coast and Whitsundays, Central Highlands and Coalfields and the Central West.
Locations which may be affected include Charters Towers, Mingela and Natal Downs.
The bureau’s radar shows heavy rain heading toward Charters Towers, which was scorched by temperatures just below 40C.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it’s flooded, forget it.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Avoid using the telephone during a thunderstorm.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
