How Australia's national lockdown dramatically changed our drinking habits

A WOMAN who was busted drinking alcohol in a public place has been told by a magistrate to consume liquor on private property.

Police prosecutor Tim Madsen said on February 11 this year at 9.30am Selmelia Grace Fraser, 32, was apprehended by police in Bulletin Square in Flinders St.

“The defendant was consuming white wine,” he said.

Fraser pleaded guilty in the Townsville Magistrates Court to one count of consuming liquor in a public place.

Magistrate Steven Mosch told Fraser to leave the liquor at home.

“There is no issue with you drinking wine if you choose to do so, but you can’t do it in a public place like Bulletin Square,” he said.

“In the early hours of the morning the public might be there using or passing through it.”

Mr Mosch acknowledged there was no allegation of “anti-social” behaviour and fined Fraser $150.

A conviction was recorded.
