A TOWNSVILLE born-and-raised country musician is following the same path as some of the genre’s greats.

Sammy White won the prestigious Star Maker award at this year’s Tamworth Country Music Festival, the same award that helped propel the careers of artists such as Keith Urban and Lee Kernaghan.

“It hasn’t sunk in yet,” the 22-year-old said of her win. “I have been told by some of my mates who have been in the same situation it takes about five days to settle.”

The win has kickstarted White’s year, as she gears up for the release of a new EP and embarking on another trip to Nashville. The lead single of the yet to be named EP is Drowning my Sorrows, which White said was based on an account she witnessed.

“The backstory about it is about everyone goes through troubles at some stage in their life,” she said.

White is aiming to release her EP later this year but says she was still perfecting it.

“As a bit of a perfectionist I’ve got a few things I’m tweaking,” she said.

The young songstress grew up on a hobby farm in Deeragun but now resides in Newcastle. “I just moved to Newie in the past couple of months just for more opportunities,” she said.
