More than 8000 people are expected to flock to Townsville to watch the Jeff Horn versus Tim Tszyu superfight.

Tickets for the bout to be held at Queensland Country Bank Stadium on August 26 have gone on sale, with prices ranging from little more than $23 for children up to the thousands for prime ringside seats.

The fight, which is anticipated to draw in up to 16,000 fans to the stadium, comes at a much needed time as the city bounces back from the COVID-19 lockdown.

“Fight club is back in Townsville, and the first rule about fight club in Townsville is that everyone talks about fight club in Townsville,” Townsville MP Scott Stewart said.

“It will be a huge shot in the arm for the local economy, where we see 16,000 people come to this great stadium and also spend their money here to support our local recovery for our local shops and businesses.”

City the real victor of superfight

Mr Stewart said securing the fight was a coup for the city, bolstering its strong sporting calendar.

“I don’t think it gets any bigger than what we’ve got lined up for the people of Townsville. A super fight at the stadium on the Wednesday night, followed by the V8s,” he said.

“We know it attracts thousands and thousands of people not only locally but right across North Queensland, right across Queensland, in fact right across Australia. Here’s the double header for them.”

For those fortunate enough to have upwards of $1995 can watch Queenslander Horn take on New South Welshman Tszyu up close with ringside front row seats. The price includes a 3.5 hour food and drink package, pre-bout dining inside the stadium and dedicated event management staff to look after them.

Rows just behind start will sell for $895 while corporate suites start from $495 a person and corporate boxes will start from $295 a person.

Tourism Minister Kate Jones said early projections suggested the fight would bring in $5.6m for the city through 24,100 room nights and direct and incremental spending.

Horn’s promoter Dean Lonergan said the lockdown had only added further hype.

“This is a fight all Australia wants to see and waiting a few more months has only added to the excitement and expectation,” Mr Lonergan said.

“It’s fantastic that this showdown will still be staged at Townsville’s wonderful new stadium and I applaud the Queensland Government and Tourism Events Queensland for their efforts to help reschedule the fight for August 26.”
