The boy allegedly murdered at a Townsville home has been identified at Thai-li Ned.
Thai-li, 9, was struck over the head with a blunt object allegedly by a woman he was living with, Schynada Karkadoo, 24.
This masthead understands he was allegedly struck with a plank of wood.
Emergency services were called to the Charles St, Kirwan address on Saturday about 7.10pm.
When police officers arrived at the scene, they found the boy dead.
The 24-year-old had her matter mentioned in Townsville Magistrates Court, with a brief of evidence ordered.
Detective Senior Sergeant David Miles from the Child Protection Unit said the alleged crime was “quite abhorrent”.
He said there was a “significant head injury” that was “quite obvious”.
“Upon arrival we located a nine-year-old male who was deceased, with apparent head injuries,” he said.
Police are investigating whether a weapon was used and if so what type.
“Certainly, that’s part of our inquiries at the moment. The injury is consistent with what I would say at this stage appears to be blunt force trauma,” Detective Miles said.
“We’ll await the outcome of the autopsy before we make an absolute determination of what weapon may have been used.”
Karkadoo, 24, was looking after the boy, and has a “loose family connection” to him.
Thai-li had been living with Karkadoo and her three children for a few months prior to his death. Police are investigating the arrangements and the formality of any care agreements that were in place.
Thai-li’s mother, Tiarne Ned, is on remand at Townsville Correctional Centre.
Officers who were at the house said it was a very confronting crime scene.
Detective Miles said the alleged crime was “quite abhorrent”.
“Anything involving a traumatic injury and the death of a child, which in the circumstances like this occurred, is quite abhorrent,” he said.
“No child should be subjected to anything that obviously leads to this sort of outcome from them.”
Police will allege that a call from Karkadoo led a relative in Doomadgee to attend their local police station to request a welfare check be carried out at the Charles St home.
“The call came from another relative, whom the 24-year-old had had a conversation with, who alerted QAS and QPS to the scene,” Detective Miles said.
Karkadoo was taken into custody without issue.
Investigations are ongoing, with the house to remain a crime scene until the autopsy is completed later in the week.
Detective Miles said police were working on the time frame of the incident, with information to come from the autopsy, to conclude the time of the child’s death.
“We believe the child may have sustained the injury within eight hours, as to what point the child was deceased will be a matter for the autopsy,” he said.
“We do have information as to what may have transpired, but we will await a definite outcome from the autopsy before we will commit as to exactly what that was.”
Police will allege an eight-hour window between Thai-li’s time of death and police finding his body about 7.10pm on Saturday.
Police had been to the residence before several times for unrelated matters and had minor interactions with the nine-year-old in the past.
“We had had very brief interactions with this young person, but obviously being nine years of age, (he) hadn’t come to our attention for any offending behaviour or anything like that,” Detective Miles said.
With the scene confronting for attending emergency services and the age of the young boy, Detective Miles said the outpouring of grief from the community was ‘totally understandable’.
“From our perspective though it’s important we hold the community’s values to account and the person who has been charged with this offence is held to account for what has actually occurred. That’s important for us as well,” he said.
