Queensland Police have declared a crime scene and are investigating a fire in an abandoned building at an aged-care facility in Charters Towers.
Emergency services were called to the Eventide Residential Aged Care facility on Dalrymple Road just after 6.20pm on Sunday night, with fire crews arriving to find the abandoned building ‘fully engulfed’.
A spokesman from the Queensland Fire Service said the fire was contained shortly after 7pm, with no reported injuries.
Investigations are continuing on Monday morning to determine the cause of the fire.
KAP leader Robbie Katter posted a picture of the fire on Sunday evening, saying it was ‘very disappointing’ following attempts from the community to repurpose the buildings which are no longer in use.
In 2022, Mr Katter called for the disused buildings to be repurposed into housing after a private developer expressed interest in the facility.
The abandoned area of the facility had also hosted the production crew of Survivor at the time.
Eventide is owned by the Queensland government and includes 13 clusters of eight single rooms.
Mayor at the time, Frank Beveridge, said the area had been earmarked for the new hospital that Charters Towers has been campaigning for.
