A CANE farm fronting the Burdekin River boasting “excellent” soil and production has entered the market.

Colliers International associate director Angelo Castorina said the property on 327 McDowell Rd, near Home Hill, presented possible buyers with a rare opportunity.

“It fronts on to the Burdekin River, and the soil in that particular area is excellent,” he said. “(It has) high production figures in terms of tonnes per hectare of cane being produced. It’s a good opportunity for someone to pick up a good quality farm.”

The 110ha farm, which has 80ha under cane, last year produced about 10,497 tonnes of cane.

Production since 2005 shows a range of about 9875 tonnes to 14,552 tonnes of cane. The sugar industry in the Burdekin was touted as a way the region could survive the economic impact of the global coronavirus outbreak.

A Wilmar Sugar spokesman said crop estimates for all Wilmar milling regions were being finalised, but early indications were that the crop would be slightly up on last year’s.

Mr Castorina said farms in the Burdekin were in high demand, particularly those to the south near Home Hill.

He said the property had the added benefit of being close to Wilmar Sugar’s Inkerman Mill and the sale also included some machinery, including four tractors, trailers and tools.

The McDowell Rd property is irrigated with two underground bores with pumps and an open water pump in the river. It also has a steel frame machinery shed with three phase power, wired for generator power and loading dock.

The sale will also include a two-storey three-bedroom masonry block home with dining and living area, office, ducted airconditioning and self-contained granny flat.

Expressions of interest close on Thursday, April 30.
