Aussie road rage on the rise

POWER was cut to parts of North Ward overnight, after residents and passers by watched on as a man crashed at high speed into a pole.

The terrifying incident happened shortly after 11pm on Saturday night when a 28 year old man clipped a roundabout on Mitchell Street and Howitt Street before plummeting into an electricity pole while driving a Mazda Hatchback.

Paramedics treated the man for minor cuts and bruising before transporting him in a stable condition to Townsville University Hospital where he remains.

Townsville District Duty Officer Senior Sergeant Scot Warrick said the crash was made all the more concerning given the location and amount of people walking around the area.

“We see it time and time again how very quickly things can go very, very bad and innocent people can get caught up in it,” he said.

“That location, particularly at this time of year is filled with people making their way too and from the Strand so it is a reminder for people to be aware of their surroundings and drive to the conditions.”

Snr Sgt Warrick said the Forensic Crash Unit was investigating whether drugs and alcohol were a factor.

“We have numerous people assisting police and certainly witnesses do report that high speed was involved,” he said.

“The crash caused extensive damage to the vehicle and cut power to surrounding areas.

“The road was shut for two hours while forensic crash unit officers did their job and as an investigation is pending no charges have been laid.”

The 28 year old male is expected to be discharged from hospital by Sunday afternoon.
