An application has been lodged with Townsville City Council to build a new fast food restaurant with a cult following in a popular shopping centre.

Documents show the council received an application to build a Taco Bell at Thuringowa Central’s Willows Shopping Centre on March 9, just months after the first restaurant opened its doors in Townsville – the first restaurant of its kind outside an Australian capital city.

Hundreds of people lined up outside of Taco Bell in November when it opened at the former Sizzler site.

Some people, including Sarah Keith and Matthew Loder, even camped in the carpark to ensure they were some of the first in the city to try the new cuisine.

Paramedics were called to the first opening to treat a patient for a “heat related illness”.

Taco Bell marketing manager Tamika Nelsen told the Townsville Bulletin it was not unusual for people to camp outside new Taco Bell stores.

Australian franchisee Collins Food Limited, which incorporates KFC, Sizzler and Support Centre, will open more than 50 new Taco Bells across Australia by 2022.

The first Taco Bell in Australia was built in the Brisbane suburb Annerley in 2017.
