Townsville is home to the latest national pinball champion after an Alligator Creek local took home the grand title.

It was a two-day slog for Rob Milla who beat 47 other players at the International Flipper Pinball Association Australian Pinball Championship Series in February.

It is the second year in a row Mr Milla qualified for the championships after accumulating enough points from competitions in 2018 and 2019.

“I was there to have fun and the prizemoney and the title were secondary and I think that is what helped me win,” Mr Milla said. “The other guys were really stressing about it … but I went for a walk on the beach and de-stressed myself.”

It took 18 qualifying games to reach the finals where Mr Milla qualified first, which was “a huge surprise” at the Coolangatta Timezone.

The father-of-four displays his 1.6-metre tall trophy in his pinball room and will invest his $1000 prizemoney into restoring a pinball machine.

Mr Milla ranks 12th in Australia out of 2584 players and 2635th in the world out of more than 40,000 players in the 2020 rankings.
