More than 100 rowers put in a mammoth effort for the 24-hour rowathon event which saw members from all areas of the community converge to raise funds for brain cancer research.

A total amount of funds raised is expected to be announced later this week when all tallies are counted.

Speaking in the final minutes of the event organiser Andrea Piotto told rowers the last 24 hours would be unforgettable.

Last year’s Row for a Cure took place just days after Laurie’s Love founder Laurence Pavone died just 10 months after he was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer.

Mrs Piotto said organisers had come to the conclusion earlier that they may not beat last year’s $44,000 raised.

Despite this, Row for a Cure creator Dave Sexton said he had the idea of breaking $100,000 in his head.

“This year, the 2020 Laurie’s Love Row for a Cure, we’ve raised $134,000,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of Laurence’s family, sister Sandra Flanagan told crowds of the excruciation of losing her extraordinary brother just ten months after his diagnosis.

“My brother Laurence created Laurie’s Love to give people hope for a better future,” she said.

“He always said the funds raised may help find a cure but the love raised will help cure man kind.

“When Laurence was first diagnosed he knew there was no cure for brain cancer, he knew the survival rates were low, this was devastating for him and all of us that loved him.”

Mrs Flanagan said the event had given hope to the charity and hope for a cure for brain cancer sufferers.

“There has been so much love surrounding this event in the last 12 months as Dave, Andrea, Tammy, Lauren and Fiona work together and were able to get so many people willing to contribute to this event.”
