ACCESSING first-hand knowledge to set himself up for success in his golden years is what Roger Walsh values about the North Queensland Retirees.
The retired police inspector said he joined the club in 2010 and appreciated the valuable support from the club during a time when he felt vulnerable.
“Moving into retirement is a big step and one that most people take very seriously and even before you walk out the door you will certainly have doubts as to how you will manage in your retirement,” he said.
“The club has opened up a new challenge to meet new people and you get a perspective of retirement issues and you get those hints from people that are already been retired for a while.”

Mr Walsh said he retired from the police force in 2000 after working for 37 years and was proud that the club actively campaigned for retiree rights.
“North Queensland Retirees is primarily an a-political advocacy group where they sit down with politicians of all political persuasions, at all government levels and respectfully try to direct politicians thinking towards making political decision which will assist retirees,” he said.
Mr Walsh said the club had 86 members and played a role in making retirement a happy and content period in people’s lives.
“The hardest part is for everyone is the real worry if you will have the enough money to retire on and how long will it last,” he said.
“It has given me the opportunity to talk to people who do their own investment and who self-manage their superannuation so that you get an overview of everything that a retiree can use and that can fund themselves during their retirement.”
Mr Walsh said the club get-togethers offered members a range of activities and material that related to retirement.
“The meetings always have a guest speaker and they cover all facets of retirement and provide information on topics such as finance, health, legal, travel and retirement villages,” he said.
“The meetings also provide the perfect opportunity for people to meet new and old friends who swap stories and experiences over a cup of tea or coffee and a biscuit.”
