'Meteor' stuns Townsville locals

Incredible footage has captured the moment a “rogue meteor” was seen lighting up the sky above North Queensland.

A bright flash of light was spotted in the night sky in Townsville at about 9.22pm on Saturday, with hundreds of people taking to social media to share videos and pictures.

Townsville resident Brendon Scarr said his doorbell camera caught the moment the object entered Earth’s atmosphere, glowing green, then white and red as it fell.

“We were shocked because the night sky literally turned to daylight,” he said.

An amateur astronomer in Townsville said judging by the video, it appeared to be a “rogue meteor” which appeared to have fallen somewhere in far north west Queensland.

“It’s not a common sight at all here, people who happened to see it should feel lucky,” he said.
