An exciting new chapter has begun for one of Townsville’s longest running clubs, which is on the lookout for more members to take advantage of its unique offering and freshly renovated new space in the CBD.

Described as the region’s “premier private membership club”, the North Queensland Club was founded in 1885 as an exclusive meeting place for the professional, business, legal, literary, and rural communities.

Since it was built in 1967, the club’s building at 146 Denham St has been a fixture of the Townsville CBD landscape, where members could quietly discuss the important issues of the day, plan for the future of their businesses, as well as attend events, network, or socialise.

Recognising the building was too big for its members, the club’s president Elizabeth Buckley said they listed it for sale and began searching for a new location, with assistance from Colliers Townsville leasing executive Aaron Power.

The co-owner of Delta Office Solutions, and member of the NQ Club for the past 15 years, Mrs Buckley said the club was ideal for people who didn’t wish to come into contact with the general public – like those in the legal profession.

“We also do things like luncheons with guest speakers, wine nights, theme nights, so it’s just a club for people to get together and a space where you can go and it’s not busy, it’s not got pokie machines, or lots of noise,” Mrs Buckley said.

“It is the sort of thing that’s declining these days. There’s a lot of clubs that have gone away, and that’s why we didn’t want to stay in Denham St.”

Following the sale of their CBD building for $1.4 million in November 2023, the club settled on the space that formerly hosted Italian restaurant Zizzi’s at 241 Flinders St, due to its central location, ample floor space, and rear parking availability.

After signing a five year lease, the club embarked on a $100,000 renovation which was completed just before it reopened in early December.

“We’ve knocked a wall through at the front, we’ll put carpets down, we’ve redone the bar top and we’re putting kegerators in fridges,” she said.

“It can do everything that we did in the North Queensland club in the Denham St building (but) it’ll be cozier as well.”

A big membership drive was planned for the new year, to entice fresh blood along with former members.

Mr Power was happy to have helped the NQ Club secure a new tenancy following an extensive search.

“(The new premises) has been undergoing extensive refurbishment over the last three to four months,” Mr Power said.

“NQ Club is a Townsville institution and has been in operation for a very long time. The move ensures the future viability of the club.”
