A KEY purpose-built tool to boost tourism in Townsville was officially unveiled yesterday along the Bruce Highway.

Nestled in the new Elliot Springs housing development at Julago, the Townsville Visitor Information Centre has opened its doors to be the welcoming voice of the city.

Townsville Enterprise director tourism and events Lisa Woolfe said the centre would provide an insight to tourists visiting Townsville.

“Visitor information centres … are the welcoming faces to our city and they are all about driving longer stays and increasing expenditure in our cities,” she said. Sixty welcoming faces will volunteer at the centre and are “ecstatic” to be working at the new location.

Ms Woolfe said the visitor information centre was relocated from Billabong Sanctuary to capture increased visitors travelling north.

“Eliot Springs is the new entrance to Townsville City,” she said.

“It’s strategically located as people are driving in from the south – where the majority of our visitors actually come from is south to north,” Ms Wolfe said.

“So it is a great diversion to get them to jump off the highway and come and find out what they need to know about Townsville.” The visitor centre hopes to welcome more than 30,000 people a year and will not only provide information but will sell tours and accommodation.

Visitors can also expect an out-of-this-world experience with virtual reality headsets providing a taste of some of the experiences available in Townsville.

Ms Woolfe said the timing to launch the visitor centre was perfect.

“The opening of this visitor information centre is really critical with the increased push for domestic visitation and people opting to drive rather than fly,” she said.

“It is the perfect time.”
