Midwives are being praised globally as they continue bringing babies into the world with particular care despite COVID-19 pressures changing the world as we knew it.
New mum Caitlin Hubert said midwives played an integral role and reassured her when she delivered Harvey Arthur Hubert at Mater Private Hospital Townsville on April 16.
“Labour was really long so we went through all the midwives on every shift,” Mrs Hubert said.
“Giving birth is not easy … and (their) encouragement was the best, especially being a first-time mum you don’t know what you’re doing.”

Today marks the international day of recognition for the healthcare profession and Mater Health regional executive director Gerard Wyvill said it was especially timely.
“Like all healthcare workers, our midwives are working even harder at this time to make sure the birthing process is as stress-free as possible for everyone involved amidst the most extraordinary circumstances,” he said.
Registered midwife Carly Bilson chose her career path during the birth of her first child when she decided to change from physiotherapy based on her experience.
She said although midwifery could bring about many challenges, the reward of seeing happy families trumped all.
“I will always remember the day I had a family come in for their third baby and I had been present at the birth of the first two,” she said. “To be able to provide that kind of care to them throughout their journey was such a great feeling.”
