A machine operator who repeatedly acted on his “sexual wants against children” has applied for bail.

Nathan William Parry’s bail application was heard in the Townsville Magistrates Court on Thursday after he allegedly refused to hand over his phone, which held child exploitation material, to police.

Police prosecutor Nathan Smith said Mr Parry should not be released because of his history of child sex offences and the danger he posed to children in the community.

The court heard Mr Parry was dealt with in the District Court in 2019 for the possession of child exploitation material and was sentenced to a term of imprisonment which was wholly suspended.

Two years later he appeared in Gladstone District Court for the indecent treatment of a child where he was given another suspended sentence of three years and probation for three years which “hasn’t seemed to rehabilitate him at all”, Mr Smith said.

“It does show that he is possessing child exploitation material and he’s acting on his sexual wants against children,” he said.

Defence Lawyer, Michael Hibble said he could be released on bail under the condition he has no mobile phone or internet access.

“(Mr Parry) stated once he got a smartphone, everything went downhill, there’s just too much temptation,” Mr Hibble said.

Magistrate Susan Warrington said even though the current charge was one of possession of child exploitation material, his previous conviction of the indecent treatment of a child made the matter “more serious”.

“I’m not satisfied that the proposed conditions would adequately mitigate risk of him committing further offences and given the nature and seriousness of his alleged offending and his history, that poses an acceptable risk,” she said.

Mr Parry’s bail was refused, with his charges adjourned to July 30.
