Some say learning to play bridge is not an easy feat with some going as far to say, it’s impossible to master but The Townsville Bridge Club are the perfect mentors to conquer the feat.

Bridge is played with four players using a standard deck of 52 cards that are all dealt out with each person holding 13 cards.

The aim of the game is to win tricks with each trick consisting of one card played by each player.

Townsville Bridge Club vice-president of five years Gloria MacDonald took up the card game 20 years ago and has been hooked ever since.

“A group of colleagues and I from JCU decided if we didn’t learn bridge then we would have no idea how to play when we retired,” she said

Ms MacDonald said playing bridge was a constant challenge where the learning process never ended.

“You can just play but if you want to continue on and learn, it is one of those hobbies that can increase exponentially,” she said.

“It is about trumps and tricks so it is very easy but it is one of those games that if you want to take it seriously you can learn more.”

Ms MacDonald has been a member of the club since 1999 and said she plays bridge five times a week for three hours a day and loved keeping her mind active in her golden years.

The club will celebrate its 53rd anniversary in 2020 and has 200 active members who are able to learn how to play and progreess to competitive events.

The club plays five times a week and holds beginner classes twice a year with the opportunity to book supervised play by expereienced players.

Ms MacDonald said she had travelled Australia playing bridge professionally and the skill had given her an opportunity to kickstart a second career travelling around the world.

“I have gone on three cruises as a bridge co-ordinator and I would teach 32 students each day and in the afternoons I would run a session for 16 tables of 64 people,” she said.

The retired executive officer at JCU said winning was never an easy feat but constantly pushing your limits was thrilling.

“If you do win, it is a perk but just getting a good score is knowing you have done your best every time,” she said.
