A new panel focused on bringing big names to the North has officially joined Townsville Enterprise in hopes of making the city a ‘must-visit’ for visitors and touring events.

Townsville Enterprise CEO, Claudia Brumme-Smith said the Major Events Advisory Panel (MEAP) transitioned out of Townsville City Council on January 1, a decision made to improve the process of securing popular acts.

“We know that ultimately when we want to attract those major events to town, we do need the agility and the speed that Townsville enterprise can bring,” she said.

“When we secured Pink it was very clear the deal needs to be done in one or two weeks rather than in one or two months.”

The new Director of Major Events Acquisition and passionate North Queenslander, Chelsea Cavanah said she wants to make Townsville a “preferred location” for event promoters, while expanding local events such as Magnetic Island Race Week.

“Townsville has got some great events on the calendar and I think it’s in a really great stead to grow for the region and really support the community,” she said.

“We’ve really been listening to what people are interested in and what people want to see in Townsville.

“We’re really keen to lean on key industry partners, across both the government and also our local industry to make sure that we’re getting the most benefit for our region out of events.”

The Major Events Acquisition Panel Chair, Jamie Fitzpatrick said increasing visitation and the liveability of the city would increase the interest from investors for hotels and infrastructure.

“We look forward to working with our new panel, which is very small at this time, but a very capable team … we can put some rubber to the road very quickly and hopefully we see some bigger and greater events in our city,” he said.
