A Townsville truck driver has been busted with a range of illegal items in his vehicle after he was intercepted by police while talking on his mobile phone.

A TOWNSVILLE truck driver has been busted with a range of illegal items in his vehicle after he was intercepted by police while talking on his phone.

On September 26 last year, Luke Cameron Bowyer came to the attention of police holding a mobile phone while driving his vehicle.

Police prosecutor Tim Madsen told the Townsville Magistrates Court a police search of Bowyer’s vehicle uncovered a needle, two ice pipes and a single round of ammunition.

Mr Madsen said Bowyer returned a positive roadside drug test for methamphetamines.

Bowyer pleaded guilty to six charges including use of mobile phones, drug driving and no authority required to possess explosives.

The court heard Bowyer had been busted drug driving twice in the past five years.

Defence lawyer Mathai Joshi said his client had been a truck driver for five years and the items found in the vehicle did not belong to his client.

“He takes responsibility for the items found in the car but the items belonged to his sister, but he has taken possession of those,” he said.

“In relation to the ice use, it is something he is not addicted to but in his line of work it is something he would have previously partaken in to keep him awake. I know it is not the best explanation.”

Magistrate Steven Mosch immediately interrupted Mr Joshi and told him, “it is a shocking explanation”.

Mr Mosch told Bowyer that he was a “danger” on the roads while driving under the influence of drugs.

Bowyer was fined $1750 and disqualified from driving for three months.

Convictions were recorded.
