Extreme Weather Outlook

Flat conditions presented Steve Haronga the perfect opportunity to stretch his back and arms in his outrigger canoe.

The keen paddler took to the waters off The Strand on Monday morning where he was met by glorious conditions, while enjoying some time outdoors during the COVID-19 lockdown.

Mr Haronga often heads out in the outrigger, even tackling an adventurous 34km round trip to Magnetic Island and back.

Mr Haronga said Townsville mornings were “predominantly flat”.

He can expect similar conditions, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting light winds in the morning all week.

While there were some showers at the weekend, the chance of seeing more rain in the city are slim.

To the south of Townsville, Rockhampton was smashed by “tennis ball” sized hail while Mackay recorded a near 92km/h gust on Sunday night.

Bureau forecaster Kimba Wong said such stormy conditions would ease across the state this week as the trough moved off the coast.

“We’re expecting none of that thunderstorm activity to continue through the next few days,” she said.

“Very much more benign conditions are expected for most of Queensland for the next several days.”

In Townsville, maximum temperatures are expected to reach 31C for most of the week, which is just above the April average of 30C.

Tonight is expected to be fairly warm at 24C but overnight conditions will ease later in the week.
