A man who was stabbed four times in Vincent Village Shopping Centre in 2022 has finalised his evidence before a jury, recounting what happened to the Townsville courtroom.

Brandon Jordan Storm Stephen, 21, has pleaded not guilty to grievous bodily harm after he stabbed Mr Smallwood four times inside Vincent Village, a busy family shopping centre.

The incident occurred on July 7, 2022.

Mr Smallwood said he went to the shops to buy food for his dog and nappies for his child when he saw Stephen.

The court heard the pair had “bad blood” and had been involved in 15 altercations before the shopping centre assault.

Mr Smallwood said he’d “lost” all the fights so far and had a “0-15” losing streak against Stephen because the other man kept throwing things at him and running away.

Mr Smallwood told the court he confronted Stephen because he wanted to “at least put one punch on his head”.

CCTV footage shown to the jury captures the interaction, which involved Mr Smallwood chasing Stephens through the centre before he caught him by the automatic doors.

At this point, Stephen turned and stabbed Mr Smallwood four times in his lower left abdomen, the court heard.

Stephen’s defence lawyer Michael Hibble asked Mr Smallwood if it was his intention to “do as much harm as possible” to the fleeing Stephen.

“No, a fair fight,” Mr Smallwood said.

A witness told the jury she’d heard Mr Smallwood approach Stephen and say “let’s take this outside” before the chase and stabbing took place.

The court heard that after realising he’d been stabbed, Mr Smallwood walked towards a nearby security guard and asked for assistance.

The trial will continue.
