One of the city’s most iconic dining precincts will soon open for more eateries and a large screen to watch Cowboys games in a planned $7m expansion.
City Lane owner Lancini Property Group exclusively revealed to the Townsville Bulletin it would be expanding the laneway leading from Flinders St through to Sturt St, creating an urban oasis-style civic square as its centrepiece.
A further 650 sqm of food and beverage options and a new alfresco seating area is also proposed for City Lane, Townsville’s only laneway experience, which houses the likes of Shaw and Co steakhouse, Korean restaurant Zizigo, craft beer bar TapHouse and Italian eatery Donna Bionda.
The expansion will involve moving the post office.
Lancini Property Group development manager Tomas Lancini said the expansion plans were in direct response to community feedback and the success of existing City Lane precinct, which opened six years ago.
“We feel this expansion, with the inclusion of a civic square, is the missing piece of City Lane. It will provide customers and residents of the Townsville CBD with a new green space to meet and relax with family and friends, while helping to open a crucial pedestrian link between the existing laneway and Sturt Street, further activating the space,” he said.
“We are committed to ongoing investment in the Townsville CBD to ensure a vibrant
place to live, work and play for the entire community.”

The proposed expansion will increase the precinct’s current size to a total of 1500 sqm and will include up to three new tenancies to complement the existing City Lane restaurants.
The commencement of works will be dependent upon development application
approval and tenant pre-commitments.
