A talented young Townsville musician will get a chance to hone her talent with the help from some of the best in the business.

Year 11 Kirwan State High School student Bridget Wegner has been selected to attend the Australian Honours Ensemble Program in Brisbane.

The viola player will head south to learn from some of Australia’s internationally recognised conductors from the Queensland Conservatorium at Griffith University in October.

This year’s program will be the second in two years she has attended.

“Since I went last year I’ve been looking forward to this opportunity because it was such a different experience. It opened my whole world to what it was like playing Viola in a professional music setting,” Bridget said.

“I learnt so many new things with the conductor there, so many new techniques.

“Some of the other attendees are at such an advanced level it’s really inspiring. The music we play, you don’t play that anywhere else really.”

Kirwan High orchestra director Carla Mulligan was excited to have Bridget take part in the program after her success in the competitive audition process.

“It’s a real honour for Bridget to be selected for this program. Hundreds of students from around Australia audition and only so many are accepted,” Ms Mulligan said.

“To be able to work in a really fine facility with industry professionals, it’s such a unique experience for her. She’ll really have a rich experience and grow a lot in her musicianship.

“We as a school are really excited for her to be able to have this opportunity.”
