LEARNING to be kind, patient and gentle is all in a day’s work for a Townsville kindergarten recognised for connecting children within the community.

C&K Oonoonba Community Kindergarten was announced as the Queensland winner of the Listening and Learning Together Curriculum Approach award.

The award recognises learning strategies that incorporate support, compassion and understanding.

Teacher and centre director Sharon Kelly said simple strategies were making a big impact on little lives.

“Our kindy did get flooded last year and the kid’s lives were turned upside down and we started a few ways to do social and emotional development and support for the children,” she said.

“We have three soft toys, Kind Kitty, Patient Penguin and Gentle Giraffe. So if kids have to wait, we say, ‘you can be a patient penguin’.”

The title was announced via an online ceremony at the inaugural 2020 C&K Innovation in Curriculum Awards.

Beating out more than 300 other Queensland C&K vendors, Ms Kelly said the kindergarten’s strategies were part of their dedication to education.

“It is delightful when you see the children actually using Gentle Giraffe when they tell another child to be a Gentle Giraffe,” she said.

Four-year-old Dade Cowdray has been attending C&K Oonoonba Community Kindergarten for a year.

Dade’s mum Miranda Cowdray said her son had adopted the Kind Kitty initiative.

“It was a big thing for Dade learning how to share and take turns and it was something that he needed to work on because he didn’t have other little kids around him when he was growing up,” she said.

“But Kind Kitty has helped him come a long way with his sharing skills and he has really blossomed.”
